They actually did wrong. They carried out an illegal order which they are entitled to refuse to do. Kendrick gave them an illegal order, and Jessop asked him to assign them an illegal order. Thats why Kendrick and Jessop were arrested. Tom Cruise was a good actor back then. He did several good films like this one and The Firm. Then he started doing those stupid Mission Impossibles where very little real acting is required.

I wish more people tried to understand the Joker instead of just being scared of him or writing him off and being crazy. One of the reasons the joker is so popular is that he speaks the truth, he's created by society and now he's returning the favor by embracing chaos. In this movie he knows Batman's one rule is that he'll never kill someone which is why he's trying to get Batman to kill him. The joker wants Batman to become a murderer so he's no better than the rest of the criminals being corrupted with no one else to protect Gotham. Same thing with how he corrupted Harvey Dent turning him into Two Face. That's why he's laughing at the end thinking he finally broke Batman just to be disappointed when Batman saves him.
